Author Bio:

I’m just a simple man, hailing from the hills of Appalachia. Out of high school, I joined the Marine Corps, getting stationed in Yuma, AZ. I love the sunshine, and decided to remain in AZ. Working full time, I attended ASU as I could, and got my BS / Information Systems from University of Phoenix in 2003.

This is my first novel. I had planned to write a 4-book series, but I now doubt I could write with the emotion and passion to equal this work, at least not for such a sustained time. I do plan on writing shorts I think I am well suited for that genre.

Tell us about your book:

It is the true story of my brother’s remarkable life. Overall, it is quite dark. There are a number of amusing, uplifting and heartwarming moments, but there are also a number of disturbing and distressing moments.

How long did it take to write the book?

About 15 months with revisions.

What inspired you to write the book?

Life events. I’d been wanting to write it for 34 years. I was hoping to wait until my father passed, but I found the memories were beginning to soften with time. I felt that if I waited too much longer, I might not be able to describe the various adventures in such exacting detail.

Talk about the writing process. Did you have a writing routine? Did you do any research, and if so, what did that involve?

I originally wrote the book as though a typical eleven year old would write it, resulting in a powerful story, but a horrendous read. A small publisher described it as “great story, won’t sell. Reads like an eleven year old wrote it.” I wanted it to read like an eleven year old narrated it, not necessarily wrote it. I set about rewriting, and ended up with a work that only an elitist could be proud of. Four re-writes later, and I finally had a work I felt was worthy of attention.

What do you hope your readers come away with after reading your book?

I hope draw attention to the effects of abuse, through the eyes of a child. I hope that people come to understand that the world is rife with people ready to prey upon their children. There are many subtle embedded messages that the reader will come to appreciate.

Excerpt from book:

Lee was broken, both physically and mentally. Grandpa Joe used to say that he was a different kid when he was younger, but all the beatings had broken his spirit. “She’s trying to turn him into the daughter she never had,” he said.

I hadn’t known any other Lee than the quiet, timid one tasked with doing virtually all the inside chores. He was the third oldest, but James, the fourth oldest, was much stronger in every way, except running.

Indeed, Feenie demanded nothing short of perfection from Lee. Clothes and dishes had to be spotless. The shack had to be kept clean, an impossible task, given so many kids making messes. Most importantly, he had to remain at the ready to give Feenie anything she wanted. He didn’t get outside to play very much.

Grandpa Joe said “Thank God she didn’t have the medical know-how or she would have given him a pussy.” I didn’t know what he meant until later on, when I asked James. Gross!
