Author Bio:

Philip R. Morehouse was born in the mountains of upstate New York where he started his life’s training and adventures on a family owned farm. Through his youth, he was mentored by his grandfather. He taught him to fish, trap and hunt. These skills were crucial to the family’s survival.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy, where he received more survival training. His ship was later involved in the Cuban Blockade, the Missile Crisis, and later was called to standby in the rescue of Americans from Haiti, during the Dominion/Haiti Crisis. He would continue to serve an extended hitch during the Viet Nam War. After returning home, he married, and to help take care of his family, he joined the Army National Guard, serving in various aerial photography assignments.

Among many other jobs, he has worked as a professional writer and photographer for over 35 years. Now with his family grown and on their own, he is free to pursue what he loves most, and that is to write true-to-life, survival, adventure type stories.

Tell us about your book:

This is a story about a young man by the name of Eric Severson, who after coming home from the Olympic tryouts, to quietly recuperate from a swimming accident, finds everything but peace and quiet, as he is swept up in a web of danger and intrigue involving the death of his best friend, a killer hurricane that separates him from his wife and two friends, a pirate hijacking and the rescue of an indigenous island tribe from extermination all of which provide for an unforgettable adventure and survival adventure beyond anything that he or you can imagine.

How long did it take to write the book?

I started the book on a yellow legal pad 32 years ago while going to college and raising 3 children. I work on it during their afternoon naps until it was time to prepare their supper. The story progressed over a period of several months, and then much later; it was typed into a computer using PageMaker as a word processor. This processed ended after having worked on it a total of some 5 months. Again, 10 years later I would pick it up and converted to Microsoft Word and editing it several more times over a period of two more years. I would not touch it again until January of 2011 at which time I would work on it for over a year with two editors and a cover illustrator/formatter before it was published.

What inspired you to write the book?

I think writing this story was eccentrically an escape mechanism; a sort of daydream about one of my fascinations with sailing. Since I did not have the time, circumstance or funds to actually buy and go sailing, I did the next best thing, which was to transport myself into a given situation.  Using my knowledge of the subject matter, the various characters came into being as the storyline took its own course. I never know ahead of time how a story will end or how the plot will manifest itself. It just naturally occurs and I am as much a captive of the plot as are my readers and just as surprised with the ending.

Talk about the writing process. Did you have a writing routine? Did you do any research, and if so, what did that involve?

Yes, as I mentioned above, I would take up the pen and legal pad and write for a few hours every afternoon while my children took their naps. My research was done using library books and from drawing on my knowledge gained during my time in the Navy.

What do you hope your readers come away with after reading your book?

Perhaps that given any situation, no matter how seemingly hopeless their given situation is, that one must never give up – there is always a way to succeed if you try hard enough. Also, I would hope that my readers are thoroughly entertained and that they also take away from the experience information on how they might react in a similar situation to improve their odds of survival.

Excerpt from book:

The girl felt herself awakening, and instantly realized that she was lying on someone. Her inborn instinct had been to scream, but a vice-like hand had cut off any sound she might have made, and an arm locked her upper body motionless. It was useless to struggle against such strength. She had been caught and would soon suffer the same fate as her friends who had been taken away. Frantically her eyes searched through the gloom; she was still in the place where she had hidden earlier. She also noticed that the person holding her seemed to be listening to something.

He had apparently been satisfied, as he’d bent over and whispered, “Please don’t scream or they will hear you, and both of us will be found and killed; do you understand?”

She was surprised! She could hardly believe it! Apparently she hadn’t been captured … someone was actually trying to help her, but who? She had never seen this man before.
