Had to laugh when you said you don't work from an outline. I don't either. I just sort of go where my characters take me although I generally have an idea, but not the ending. Hate knowing the ending too soon. Makes me rush to it and description suffers. Once had a good agent ask for an outline of a novel I was doing. I had to go back through the book and do it chapter by chapter. Didn't get the agent. Mr Patterson really brings the scene to life, so I got a real feel for what it was like for the characters in China. The story itself was well-plotted and kept me guessing.
